PART 20: HAROLD’S FINAL PROMISE

The room fell into a silence so complete that I could hear the oxygen machine beside Father Donnelly’s bed.

No one spoke.

No one dared.

Harold…

Trying to save Dale?

I looked at the old priest.

“I don’t understand.”

“You will.”

His voice was barely more than a whisper.

“But not all at once.”

Linda pulled a chair closer to the bed.

“Father…please.”

“If Harold believed Dale was in danger, we need to know why.”

Father Donnelly closed his eyes.

“When Harold first met the little boy…”

“…he didn’t know whose child he was.”

Paula looked at Dale.

“You met my father?”

Dale slowly shook his head.

“I don’t remember.”

“You were too young,” Father Donnelly said gently.

“You couldn’t have.”

He looked at me.

“It was the spring before Harold became suspicious of Richard.”

“He came to the church one Tuesday carrying groceries.”

“There was a little boy sitting alone on the back steps.”

“No coat.”

“No shoes.”

“Just a toy truck with one wheel missing.”

My heart tightened.

“That was Dale?”

Father Donnelly nodded.

“Harold asked where his parents were.”

“The boy said…”

“‘Daddy told me to stay here until he came back.’”

The old priest’s eyes filled with tears.

“He waited six hours.”

“No one came.”

Paula slowly reached for her husband’s hand.

He let her.

“What happened?” she whispered.

“Harold took him inside.”

“He bought him lunch.”

“Found him a blanket.”

“And before sunset…”

“…Richard arrived.”

The room became still.

“Was he angry?” Linda asked.

“No.”

“That frightened Harold more.”

Father Donnelly swallowed.

“Richard thanked him.”

“Smiled.”

“Collected the boy.”

“And before he left…”

“…he leaned close to Harold and said…”

The priest stopped.

His breathing grew heavier.

Linda looked toward the nurse waiting outside, but Father Donnelly gently raised one hand.

“Let me finish.”

He turned back to us.

“Richard said…”

“‘Never become attached to anything I can take away.’”

A chill swept through me.

Father Donnelly looked directly at Dale.

“Harold never forgot those words.”

“He began asking questions.”

“He searched property records.”

“He searched company records.”

“And then…”

“…he discovered who Richard really was.”

Linda leaned forward.

“What did he discover?”

The old priest slowly shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“He never told me.”

“He only said one thing.”

“What?”

“‘If Richard ever disappears…’”

“‘…the child must never pay for the father’s sins.’”

Tears rolled silently down Paula’s face.

She looked at her husband.

“You were just a little boy…”

Dale stared at the floor.

“My mother never talked about those years.”

“She burned every photograph.”

“She said the past was poisonous.”

Janice suddenly stood.

“I know why.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“I’ve been blaming Richard for twenty-eight years.”

She took a shaky breath.

“I never once asked what happened to the child after he vanished.”

She looked at Dale with tears in her eyes.

“I’m so sorry.”

Before Dale could answer, Linda’s phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

Her expression changed immediately.

“It’s the sheriff.”

She answered on speaker.

“Linda Mercer.”

“Linda,” the sheriff said urgently, “we’ve just finished searching Harold Ellis’s old accounting office.”

“Did you find anything?”

“Only one thing.”

“What?”

“A locked filing cabinet.”

Linda’s pulse seemed to quicken.

“Can you open it?”

“We already did.”

Silence.

“What was inside?”

The sheriff didn’t answer right away.

When he finally spoke, his voice was unusually quiet.

“There was only a single file.”

“Whose?”

Another pause.

“The tab doesn’t say Richard Vaughn.”

“It doesn’t say Janice Holloway.”

“It doesn’t even say Harold Ellis.”

Linda frowned.

“Then whose name is on it?”

The sheriff took a slow breath.

“It’s labeled…”

FOR DALE — OPEN ONLY IF I DON’T SURVIVE.
