PART 27: BOX 314 WAS ALREADY OPEN
The drive to First County Bank felt endless.
The sheriff’s cruiser led the way.
Linda followed behind him.
Paula gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles had turned white.
I sat in the passenger seat with the brass key resting in my palm.
Harold had held this key.
Father Donnelly had guarded it.
Richard had searched for it.
And now…
it felt heavier than it had any right to.
As we turned onto Main Street, I saw the bank.
Its front doors were still open.
Employees were locking the side windows.
A security guard was pulling the metal gate across the lobby.
Linda parked so quickly her tires squealed.
She hurried inside, holding her attorney’s identification above her head.
“Please!”
“One minute!”
The branch manager looked annoyed at first.
Then he recognized Linda.
“Ms. Mercer?”
“I need access to Safe Deposit Box 314.”
“I’m sorry. The vault is closing.”
“The owner is here.”
He looked at me.
“And this is?”
“Marguerite Ellis.”
The manager frowned.
He typed my name into his computer.
His expression changed.
“Mrs. Ellis…”
“Yes?”
“There seems to be a problem.”
My heart skipped.
“What kind of problem?”
He hesitated.
“According to our records…”
“…Box 314 was accessed this afternoon.”
The room fell silent.
Linda stepped forward.
“By whom?”
“I’m afraid I can’t disclose another customer’s identity.”
“There shouldn’t be another customer.”
The manager swallowed.
“There are two authorized keys on file.”
Every eye turned toward me.
“There shouldn’t be.”
He looked back at the screen.
“One was used at 2:11 this afternoon.”
I tightened my grip on Harold’s key.
“We’ve had this key all day.”
“I understand.”
“But the vault log doesn’t lie.”
The sheriff laid his badge on the counter.
“I need to see the surveillance footage.”
The manager nodded nervously.
“I’ll bring it up.”
Within moments, the security video appeared on a monitor.
The timestamp read:
2:11 P.M.
A man wearing a gray suit stepped into the vault room.
His face was hidden beneath the brim of a dark hat.
He handed the manager a key.
The vault door opened.
He disappeared inside.
Exactly four minutes later…
he came back out.
Carrying nothing.
Linda frowned.
“He walked in empty-handed.”
“He walked out empty-handed.”
The manager nodded.
“That’s why no one thought anything of it.”
I stared at the screen.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
“Can you rewind it?”
The manager backed the footage up.
“Stop.”
The image froze.
I pointed toward the man’s left hand.
“What is that?”
The manager zoomed in.
It wasn’t empty.
Tucked between his fingers…
was a folded white envelope.
When he left the vault…
the envelope was gone.
Linda smiled.
“He didn’t remove something.”
“He left something.”
The sheriff looked puzzled.
“You think the box was used as a mailbox?”
Linda nodded slowly.
“I think Harold expected this.”
The manager looked even more confused.
“I’m sorry…what exactly is going on?”
Before anyone answered, an elderly vault attendant quietly stepped forward.
“I’ve worked here thirty-eight years.”
Everyone turned toward him.
“I remember Mr. Ellis.”
My pulse quickened.
“You knew Harold?”
The old man smiled.
“He rented Box 314.”
“But every year…”
“…he came on the same day.”
“What day?” I asked.
“The anniversary of your wedding.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“He never missed it.”
The attendant’s smile faded.
“The last time he came…”
“…he asked me a strange question.”
“What question?”
“‘If someone ever opens my box before my wife does…’”
The old man paused.
“…’will you promise not to throw away the envelope they leave behind?’”
Silence.
The manager blinked.
“There is an envelope.”
“What?”
“In the box.”
“He didn’t take it.”
“He left one.”
The manager reached for the vault keys.
Five minutes later…
we stood inside the vault.
Box 314 slid slowly from the wall.
My hands trembled as I turned Harold’s brass key.
The lock clicked.
Inside…
there was no money.
No jewelry.
No deeds.
Only a single cream-colored envelope.
Across the front, in handwriting I had never seen before, were seven words.
Harold… I finally know who betrayed us.
Below those words…
someone had signed only one name.
Richard.
